#140 Gaylord Perry

• Gaylord Perry was 16-12 with a 2.76 ERA in 37 starts in 1971.
• Perry started and lost game 1 of the NLCS. He allowed five runs in  nine innings (the Giants lost 5-4).
• Perry and Frank Duffy were traded to the Cleveland Indians for Sam McDowell after the 1971 season.

#325 Juan Marichal

• Juan Marichal was 18-11 with a 2.94 ERA in 37 starts in 1971.
• Marichal started and won the final game of the 1971 season on September 30. The win clinched the NL West title for the Giants.
• Juan was the winning pitcher in game 3 of the NLCS. He started the game and allowed one run in a complete-game 2-1 victory. It was the only game the Giants won in the series.

#108 John Cumberland

• John Cumberland started the 1971 season as a relief pitcher. After pitching in 22 games as a reliever John was placed in the staring rotation in late June. 
• Cumberland was 9-6 with two saves and a 2.92 ERA in 45 games (21 starts) in 1971.
• John started and lost game 2 of the NLCS. He allowed three runs in three innings pitched.
• The 1971 season was the peak of John's career. He was traded from the Giants after starting the 1972 season 0-4 with an 8.64 ERA. Cumberland pitched for several major and minor league teams from 1972-1974.

#621 Ron Bryant

• Ron Bryant was 7-10 with a 3.79 ERA in 22 starts for the Giants in 1971. 
• He allowed one run in two innings pitched in game 2 of the NLCS.

#251 Frank Reberger

• Frank Reberger was 3-0 with a 3.92 ERA in 13 games (7 starts). He wasn't used in the NLCS. 
• Frank was with the Giants as a swingman for the 1970 season and pitched a little for the Giants in 1972. He spent most of his time from 1971-1974 pitching for the Giants' AAA Phoenix club.

1962 Topps Giants - Part 5 (more pitchers)

#155 Stu Miller

• Stu Miller was the main relief ace for the Giants in 1962. He went 5-8 with a 4.12 ERA and had 19 saves in 59 games. He appeared in two games in the World Series and didn't allow any runs in 1 1/3 innings pitched.

#33 Don Larsen

• Don Larsen was 5-4 with 11 saves and a 4.38 ERA in 49 games. Larsen pitched in three games in the World Series and was credited with the win in game 4. Larsen was the pitcher of record when Tom Haller hit a grand slam to put the Giants ahead for good. Don had a 3.86 ERA in 2 1/3 innings in the series.

#71 Dick LeMay

• Dick LeMay pitched in nine games and was 0-1 with one save and a 7.71 ERA. He spent most of the season with AAA Tacoma.

#199 Gaylord Perry

• Gaylord Perry was 3-1 with a 5.23 ERA in 13 games (7 starts). He started the season (which was his rookie season) with the Giants, was sent to Tacoma in June, and returned to pitch in four September games. Perry didn't appear in the World Series.

#329 Bob Bolin

• Bob Bolin was 7-3 with five saves and a 3.62 ERA in 41 games (5 starts). Bolin pitched in two games in the World Series and had a 6.75 ERA in 2 2/3 innings.

#578 Jim Duffalo

• Jim Duffalo was 1-2 with a 3.64 ERA in 24 games (2 starts). He didn't appear in the World Series.

Bobby Bolin (#505) was 7-7 with an ERA of 4.43 in 30 games (22 starts)

 

Mike McCormick (#517) was the third starter in the Giants' rotation. He went 11-9 with a 3.34 ERA in 28 starts.

The Phoenix Giants were 85-61 under Garibaldi's management. He was traded to the Kansas City Royals after the season.

Today in Giants' History -- September 17

1923 - The Giants' George Kelly sets a major-league record by homering in the 3rd, 4th and 5th against the Cubs' Vic Aldridge as New York rolls to a 13-6 win. Kelly adds a single and double to run his total bases to 15 for the game. Kelly has now hit a record six homers off cousin Aldridge this year, a mark off one pitcher that will be tied by Ted Williams (in 1941, off Johnny Rigney) and Ted Kluszewski (in 1954, off Max Surkont). Kelly is the first player to homer in three successive innings.

1968 - At Candlestick, Giants hurler Gaylord Perry (14-14) no-hits the Cardinals and Bob Gibson, 1-0, with the only run of the game being tallied on Ron Hunt's solo home run. Tomorrow the Redbirds will return the favor and no-hit San Francisco.

Today in Giants' History -- September 10

1924 - At the Polo Grounds, the Giants rip the Braves 22 - 1 in the opener of a doubleheader. Frankie Frisch goes 6-for-6 before grounding out.

1963: At New York, the Giants trail 3 - 0 after 7 innings when manager Alvin Dark sends up consecutive Alous to bat in the 8th. Pinch hitter Jesus Alou grounds out, pinch hitter Matty Alou strikes out, and leadoff hitter Felipe Alou bounces back to P Carlton Willey. The Giants lose, 4 - 2. Willie McCovey's 38th homer and Orlando Cepeda's 29th account for the SF scoring.

1967: At Candlestick Park, San Francisco hurler Gaylord Perry's 40-inning team record consecutive scoreless streak comes to an end as the Cubs score an unearned run in the seventh inning of 2-1 loss to Giants. The future Hall of Fame member will match his franchise mark with another string of scoreless innings in 1970.
