1989 Topps Giants - Part 5 (more pitchers)

Isn't that a great pose? Mike LaCoss (#417) was a swingman for the Giants in 1989. He was 10-10 with a 3.17 ERA and had six saves. Mike pitched in a total of 45 games, 18 of them starts.

Kelly Downs (#361) was 4-8 with a 4.79 ERA in 18 games (15 starts). He was injured and didn't pitch between May 1 and August 13.

Craig Lefferts (#372) was the main reliever for the Giants in 1989. He was 2-4 with 20 saves and an ERA of 2.69 in 70 starts. It was cool to see him sprint in from the bullpen when coming into a game.

Don Robinson (#473) was 12-11 and had a 3.43 ERA in 32 starts.

Atlee Hammaker (#572) was 6-6 with a 3.76 ERA in 28 games (9 starts). He was out for a month from mid-June to mid-July and missed time from early August until the last week of the season.

Dave Dravecky (#601) was 2-0 in two starts in 1989. He broke his arm in his second start back after having a cancerous tumor removed from his pitching arm. Dave was out for the season and then his arm was broken again during the celebration when the Giants won the NL pennant. His arm was examined and another tumor was found in his arm. Dave's career was over and his arm eventually had to be amputated.

Scott Garrelts (#703) was 14-5 with a NL-leading 2.28 ERA in 29 starts.

Randy Bockus (#733) didn't pitch for the Giants in 1989. He became a free agent after the 1988 season and signed with the Detroit Tigers. Randy appeared in two games for the Tigers in 1989 and that was it for his major league career.

1983 Topps Giants - Part 4 (pitchers)

Greg Minton (#470) was 7-11 with 22 saves and a 3.54 ERA in 73 games.

Andy McGaffigan (#68T) was 3-9 with 2 saves and a 4.29 ERA in 43 games (11 starts).

Al Holland (#58) didn't pitch for the Giants in 1983. He and Joe Morgan were traded to the Philadelphia Phillies after the 1983 season for Mike Krukow, Mark Davis, and a minor leaguer.

Atlee Hammaker (#342) was 10-9 with a NL-leading 2.25 ERA in 23 starts. He pitched in the All Star game and was rocked. He gave up seven hits in 2/3 of an inning, including a grand slam to Fred Lynn. Here is a "where are they now" article written in about 2005.

Renie Martin (#263) was 2-4 with 1 save and an ERA of 4.20 in 37 games (6 starts).

Jim Barr (#133) was 5-3 with 2 saves and a 3.98 ERA in 53 relief appearances in 1983.

1986 Topps Giants - Part 5 (pitchers)

Atlee Hammaker (#223) didn't pitch for the Giants in 1986. He was out all season because of a shoulder problem, surgery on both knees, and a debilitating virus. Here is a "where are they now" article from 2005.

Mark Davis (#138) was 5-7 with four saves and an ERA of 2.99 in 67 games (2 starts). Davis was the first player selected in the 1979 draft. Mark started his career with the Philadelphia Phillies in 1980, went to the Giants in 1983, and went to the San Diego Padres as part of the big trade they made on July 5, 1987. Davis ended up pitching in 15 seasons from 1980-1997.

Jeff Robinson (#93T) was 6-3 with eight saves and a 3.36 ERA in 64 games (1 start) in 1986. He pitched for the Giants from 1984-1987 and finished his major league career in 1992.

Roger Mason (#70T) was 3-4 with a 4.80 ERA in 11 starts in 1986. He pitched for the Giants from 1985-1987 and ended up pitching in the majors from 1984-1994.

Mike LaCoss (#57T) was 10 -13 with a 3.57 ERA in 37 games (31 starts) in 1986. After pitching for three other teams, Mike had most of his success with the Giants. He pitched for the Giants from 1986 until his release on July 3, 1991. Mike tried to pitch in the minors for Montreal's AAA Indianapolis club in 1992 but he hung 'em up after seven games.

Juan Berenguer (#9T) was 2-3 with four saves and a 2.70 ERA in 46 games (4 starts). This (1986) was the only season Juan pitched for the Giants.

1987 Topps Giants - Part 5 (more pitchers)

Atlee Hammaker was 10-10 with an ERA of 3.58 in 31 games (27 starts). He pitched for the Giants from 1982 until his release on August 12, 1990.

Greg Minton was 1-0 with one save and a 3.47 ERA in 15 appearances. He was released by the Giants on May 28 after a long career (1975-1987) with the club. Greg was signed by the California Angels and he pitched there until his retirement after the 1990 season.

Mike Krukow was 5-6 with a 4.80 ERA in 30 games (28 starts). Krukow was the winning pitcher in game 4 of the NLCS. Mike pitched for the Giants from 1983 until he retired in June of the 1989 season.

Terry Mulholland didn't pitch for the Giants in 1987. He was 7-12 with a 5.07 ERA for AAA Phoenix.

Roger Mason was 1-1 with a 4.50 ERA in five starts in 1987. He was 5-1 in 10 starts with AAA Phoenix.

Scott Garrelts was 11-7 with 12 saves and a 3.22 ERA in 1987. He spent his entire major league career (1982-1991) with the Giants.

Kelly Downs was 12-9 with 1 save and had an ERA of 3.63 in 41 games (28 starts). He pitched for the Giants from 1986-1992 and finished his career with the Oakland A's in 1993.

Jeff Robinson was 6-8 with 10 saves and a 2.79 ERA in 63 games. He was traded to the Pittsburgh Pirates for Rick Reuschel on August 21. Why was the name section of his card red while the rest of the Giants were orange?

1988 Topps Giants - Part 4

Mike Krukow was 7-4 with a 3.54 ERA in 20 starts. Mike missed five weeks from late June to early August and made his last start on August 28.




Atlee Hammaker was 9-9 with five saves and an ERA of 3.73. He started 17 games and relieved in 26 others.

Scott Garrelts was 5-9 with 13 saves and a 3.58 ERA in 65 appearances.

Dave Dravecky was 2-2 with a 3.16 ERA in 7 starts. He made six starts in April and early May and started another game on May 28, then he shut it down for the season after a cancerous tumor was found in his pitching arm.

Don Robinson had a good season as a swingman in 1988. He was 10-5 with six saves and a 2.45 ERA. He appeared in 51 games, 19 of them starts.

1990 Topps Giants - Part 5

Kelly Downs was 3-2 with a 3.43 ERA in 13 games (9 starts). He didn't pitch until August 10 and didn't start a game until August 23.

Jeff Brantley was 5-3 with 19 saves and a 1.56 ERA in 55 appearances.

Scott Garrelts was 12-11 with a 4.15 ERA in 31 starts.

Atlee Hammaker was 4-5 with an ERA of 4.28 in 25 games (6 starts). He was released on August 12 and signed with the San Diego Padres on August 24.

Trevor Wilson was 8-7 with a 4.00 ERA in 27 games (17 starts).

1984 Topps Giants - Part 4

Mike Krukow led the team in victories with 11. He was 11-12 with a 4.56 ERA in 33 starts.

Renie Martin was 1-1 with a 3.86 ERA in 12 games. Martin spent quite a bit of the season with the Phoenix Giants. He was traded to the Phillies with Al Oliver for Kelly Downs and George Riley on August 30.

Fred Breining didn't pitch for the Giants in 1984. He was traded to the Montreal Expos for Al Oliver before the season.

Mark Davis was 5-17 (0uch!) with a 5.36 ERA. He appeared in 46 games and started 27 of those games.

Jim Barr didn't pitch for the Giants in 1984. He was released during spring training.

Greg Minton was the closer for the Giants in 1984. He saved 19 games and was 4-9 with a 3.76 ERA in 74 appearances.

Gary Lavelle was a setup man and did some closing for the Giants in 1984. He had 12 saves and was 5-4 with a 2.76 ERA in 77 appearances.

Bill Laskey was 9-14 with a 4.33 ERA in 34 starts in 1984.

Atlee Hammaker was 2-0 with a 2.18 ERA in six starts. He didn't start a game until June 26, made five starts, then was out again until September 1. He started that day and didn't pitch again in the 1984 season. He made two starts (probably a rehab assignment) for the Phoenix Giants.

Andy McGaffigan didn't pitch for the Giants in 1984. He was sent to Montreal before the season as part of the Al Oliver deal.

1985 Topps Giants Part 4

Dave LaPoint (#71T) was 7-17 with a 3.57 ERA in his only season with the Giants.

Jim Gott (#40T) was 7-10 with a 3.88 ERA in 26 starts for the Giants.

Scott Garrelts (#38T) was the Giants' representative to the 1985 All Star Game. He was 9-6 with 13 saves and a 2.30 ERA. He's wearing some killer glasses!

Atlee Hammaker (#674) was 5-12 with an ERA of 3.74 in 29 starts in 1985. He wasn't quite the same after being shelled in the 1983 All Star Game.

Jeff Robinson (#592) pitched in 8 games with no record and a 5.11 ERA.

Mark Davis (#541) was 5-12 with 7 saves and a 3.54 ERA in 77 games.

Jeff Cornell (#514) didn't pitch for the Giants in 1985. He pitched in his last major league game on August 16, 1984. He started with AAA Phoenix and was released on April 30, 1985. He hooked on with the Chicago Cubs and pitched in their system in 1985 and 1986, but he didn't make it back to the majors.

Frank Williams (#487) pitched in 49 games and had an ERA of 4.19 and a record of 2-4.

Gary Lavelle (#462) didn't pitch for the Giants in 1985. He was traded to Toronto for Jim Gott and two minor leaguers before the season.

Bill Laskey (#331) was 5-11 with a 3.55 ERA in 19 starts.

Randy Lerch (#103) didn't pitch for the Giants in 1985. He was granted free agency after the 1984 season and signed with the Philadelphia Phillies in May 1985.

There are a lot of cards with green folding chairs in the background. It might be Scottsdale Stadium. The Giants started training there in 1984.
