A Giant Housecleaning

Chris from  was doing a housecleaning of  his cards. I claimed the Giants cards that he had. He sent these to me a few months ago but I was having scanner problems and didn't get these posted. Thanks a lot for the cards Chris!

  • This is  my favorite card from this shipment. I grew up watching "Tomorrow's Major Leaguers Today" at Phoenix Municipal Stadium. I have a lot of good memories from going to Phoenix Giants games with my father, with my little league teams, and with my friends.

  • Here is a 2009 Topps Christy Mathewson card. Those are some great stat lines on the back of the card!

  •  Lots of 2010 Topps Heritage Giants cards

  •  Some other goodies

  • The whole stack of cards.
  • Looks like the lens needs to be cleaned on my cell phone :).
  • Thanks again Chris!

Today in Giants' History -- September 11

1906 - In Boston, New York's Christy Mathewson (19-9) shuts out the Beaneaters, 3-0, striking out 9. Today's game is the last one that John McGraw, playing 3B, appears in the lineup.

1959: The Phillies Robin Roberts beats the Giants 1-0 on a 3-hitter. Roberts also gains revenge on Willie McCovey by ending McCovey's consecutive-game hitting streak at 22 games. Phils CF Richie Ashburn holds the rookie record of 23 games.

Today in Giants' History -- September 8

1904 - The visiting Phillies stop the Giants win streak at 12 when the beat up Dummy Taylor to win, 9-8. Bill Duggleby is the victor. New York then wins the nitecap, 4-1 as Christy Mathewson notches his 30th victory, over Tully Sparks. Darkness ends the game in the 7th inning.

1908 - Christy Mathewson's 30th win is a gem-an 11-inning 1-0 win over the Superbas' Nap Rucker. A single by Al Bridwell drives home Cy Seymour with the winning tally. New York stays a half-game ahead of Pittsburgh. (Mathewson won 30 or more games four times in his career and from 1901-1914 won fewer than 20 games only once)

1952 - An umpire ejects Giants P Larry Jansen for throwing a beanball. Giants manager Leo Durocher is also suspended and fined $100. Jansen is fined just $25 because of his "excellent conduct record." Brooklyn splits the doubleheader, winning the opener 10-2 and losing the nightcap 3-2. The Dodger lead stays at 5 games. (seems like there was a lot of that in the fifties)

1965 - The Giants take over 1st place for the 1st time this season as reliever Masanori Murakami wins 3 - 1 in Los Angeles, CA, dropping the Dodgers to 2nd place by .002 percentage points. The Giants have now won four straight and will win their next 10. (the Dodgers went on to win the pennant in a tight race)

Today in Giants' History -- September 2

1912 - At Boston, Christy Mathewson wins both games for the Giants in a 5 - 2, 6 - 1 sweep of the Braves. In the opener, Matty relieves Rube Marquard in the 9th with score 2 - 2 and tosses three shutout innings. Larry Doyle ends it with a 3-run homer in the 12th. Matty coasts to his 19th win in the nitecap after the Giants chase Ed Doheny with five runs in the 3rd.

1925 - After losing Game One by a 6 - 3 score to the Phils, the Giants unload in a nitecap, 24 - 9 shelling. The hits keep coming - 30 to be exact in a record 58 at-bats - at Baker Bowl. Four New Yorkers each collect four hits apiece, while a ML record-tying ten batters each collect two hits each. Doc Farrell (2-for-3) who takes over for Travis Jackson at short in the 6th is the 10th. Ex-Phil Bob Meusel drives home nine runs, while Rookie Fred Fitzsimmons allows 14 hits, including homers by Cy Williams, Johnny Mokan and Hal Carlson in the 8th frame. Phils starter Art Decatur is the loser.

1955 - After sitting out since August 7 with a broken rib, SS Alvin Dark of the Giants falls and breaks his shoulder in a game against the Phillies.

1975 - Johnnie LeMaster homers in his first ML at bat for the Giants during a 7 - 3 win over Dodgers. In 12 years and 3,191 at bats, LeMaster will hit only 22 home runs, but this first hit is a ML record - an inside the park homer. Brian Downing two years ago was the first player to hit his first homer inside the park.
