1983 Kellogg's #48 - Jack Clark

• Jack Clark wasn't as productive in 1983 as he had been in previous seasons. Clark batted .268 with 20 HR, but he only knocked in 66 runs
• Clark expressed his displeasure with Giants' management in late April. He didn't like Candlestick Park (who did?) and he thought the Giants weren't doing enough to improve the team. Jack was especially upset that the Giants traded Joe Morgan and let Reggie Smith leave as  a free agent.
• Clark was almost traded to the Pittsburgh Pirates late in the 1983 season, but the trade was voided by NL President Chub Feeney because the Pirates wanted to keep some of the players in the trade until after the season.
• The Giants said that they would try to accommodate Clark's trade demand. After the 1983 season Giants' GM Tom Haller said that there was a 50-50 chance Clark would be traded to the Pirates, but the deal didn't take place.
• Jack would play one more season with the Giants before being traded to the Cardinals after the 1984 season. It ended up being a terrible trade for the Giants.

1980 Kellogg's #57 - Jack Clark

• Jack Clark was the main man offensively for the Giants in 1980. He batted .284 with 22 HR and 82 RBI and got a few votes in the NL MVP balloting
• Jack was named co-player of the week (with Steve Carlton) in the NL for the week of June 15-22. Clark was 14 for 26 (.538 average) and homered twice during the week.
• Clark suffered a broken bone in his hand after being hit by a pitch from the Mets' Mark Bomback on August 20.
• He came back on September 18 but only pinch hit for the next three days.
• Jack returned to the starting lineup on September 21. He went 6 for 41 after the injury with no extra-base hits

Card Tribute: Jack Clark

Jack Clark was a star for the Giants for several years in the 1970s and 1980s. Jack first came up to the Giants in late 1975 at the age of 19. He had another short stint with the Giants in 1976 before coming up to stay in 1977.

The 1982 Topps Stickers. I like the 1981 stickers better, probably because I collected them. By 1982 I had started buying complete sets instead of buying from the packs. The packs were a lot more fun, but they were expensive if I wanted to collect more than 1-2 sets a year.

Stickers are great! Here are the Giants stickers from the 1981 set. These were available in my area and I collected about 2/3 of the set. One of these days I need to get a box, open the packs, and stick them in an album. Fun! :)

Jack Clark (#210) batted .268 with 20 HR and 66 RBI.

Chili Davis (#115) batted .233 with 11 HR and 59 RBI.

Dave Bergman (#32) batted .286 with 6 HR and 24 RBI in 140 at bats. He played in 90 games as a backup first baseman and outfielder.

Jeff Leonard (#309) batted .279 with 21 HR and 87 RBI.

Jerry Martin (#722) didn't play for the Giants in 1982. He was traded to the Kansas City Royals before the 1982 season for Rich Gale and Bill Laskey.

Jack Clark (#460) batted .274 with 27 HR and 103 RBI in 1982. Clark was 7th in MVP voting.

Larry Herndon (#182) didn't play for the Giants in 1982. He was traded to the Detroit Tigers before the 1982 season for Dan Schatzeder and Mike Chris.

Jim Wohlford (#116) batted .256 with 2 HR and 25 RBI in 250 at bats. He got the majority of the playing time in LF while Jeffrey Leonard was injured.

Champ Summers (#115T) batted .248 with 4 HR and 19 RBI in 125 at bats. He started several games in LF in May and July while Jeffrey Leonard was out.

Jeff Leonard (#47) batted .259 with 9 HR and 49 RBI in 80 games. He missed a big chunk of the season from early May to late July.

Chili Davis (#23T) was the starting center fielder and batted .261 with 19 HR and 76 RBI in 154 games. He finished fourth in NL Rookie of the Year voting behind Steve Sax, Johnny Ray, and Willie McGee.

Bill North (#408) led the Giants with 45 stolen bases. He batted .251 in 415 AB and walked 81 times for a .373 on base percentage.

Larry Herndon (#257) played all three outfield positions. He shared time with Terry Whitfield in LF and Bill North in CF and also occasionally spelled Jack Clark in RF. Larry batted .258 in 493 AB and led the Giants with 11 triples.

Gary Thomasson (#496) batted .256 with 17 HR and 71 RBI in 145 games.

Larry Herndon (#397) played in 49 games and batted .239 in 109 at bats. He didn't play after June 18.
