A Giant Tournament Round 2 - 1962 Giants vs. 2009 Giants


Game 1: Pablo Sandoval hit a 3-run homer in the top of the third inning. Tom Haller hit a solo shot in the bottom of the 7th inning. Fred Lewis singled in Benji Molina in the top of the 8th. Lewis later scored on a Chuck Hiller error. Matt Cain got the win and Jack Sanford took the loss. 2009 5, 1962 1.


Game 2: Barry Zito committed a balk with the bases loaded in the first inning to score Jose Pagan. In the bottom of the third Willie Mays singled, stole second, and scored on an Ed Bailey single. Felipe Alou scored on a Jim Davenport grounder. Juan Marichal went 3 for 4 and went the distance. Marichal allowed a solo home run to Aaron Rowand in the 8th inning and two other hits and struck out eight batters. 1962 3, 2009 1.


Game 3: In the top of the second Jim Davenport singled, Harvey Kuenn singled him to third, then Billy Pierce hit a grounder to score Davenport. Chuck Hiller scored Kuenn with a sacrifice fly. In the bottom of the second Andreas Torres hit a 2-run homer to tie the game. Willie Mays doubled and Tom Haller singled him in in the top of the third. Davenport singled, Kuenn walked, and Hiller singled in the top of the 8th. That run proved to be an important one as Ryan Garko singled, Travis Ishikawa doubled, and Torres singled to score a run in the bottom of the 9th for the 2009 Giants. Bob Bolin struck out Juan Uribe to end the game. 1962 4, 2009 3.


Game 4: Aaron Rowand led off the bottom of the first by hitting one into McCovey Cove. In the top of the third Willie Mays and Willie McCovey walked. Tom Haller singled Mays home. Pablo Sandoval singled and Benji Molina tripled in the bottom of the 4th. Ryan Garko singled in Molina. Pinch hitter Matty Alou singled, went to second on a grounder, and scored on a single by Jose Pagan. In the bottom of the 8th reliever Brian Wilson was allowed to hit with two out and two runners on base. He singled to left field, scoring Rowand.  Sandoval scored when Harvey Kuenn threw the ball away. Tim Lincecum got the win and Billy O'Dell took the loss. 2009 5, 1962 2.


Game 5: Chuck Hiller singled, then Jose Pagan tripled and scored on a throwing error in the top of the first. In the top of the second Jim Davenport walked, Harvey Kuenn singled, then Jack Sanford bunted the runners over. Davenport scored on a Hiller grounder. Orlando Cepeda doubled and Felipe Alou knocked him in with a single in the top of the third. Juan Uribe homered in the bottom of the fifth to put the 2009 Giants on the board. In the bottom of the sixth Freddie Sanchez doubled Pablo Sandoval singled, and Benji Molina singled to score Sanchez. Travis Ishikawa singled, scoring Sandoval. Molina scored when first baseman Orlando Cepeda booted a grounder. Randy Winn walked to force in a run and put the 2009 Giants ahead 5-4. In the bottom of the 7th Sandoval, Molina, and Ishikawa all singled to make the score 6-4. Brian Wilson pitched a scoreless ninth inning to shut the door. 2009 Giants 6, 1962 Giants 4.


Game 6: Neither team had a hit until Pablo Sandoval homered in the top of the 4th. In the top of the 5th Aaron Rowand was hit by a pitch, stole second, and scored on a Randy Winn double. Freddy Sanchez came up and hit a 2-run homer. Barry Zito didn't allow a hit until Willie Mays doubled to left in the top of the 6th. Orlando Cepeda singled in the bottom of the 9th, but that was about it (except for a couple of walks) for the 1962 offense. 2009 4, 1962 0.
